Fullen Dock Contributes to Library's Permanent Collection
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—(July 11, 2011)—Fullen Dock and Warehouse, an intermodal river terminal located at Mile 740 of the Lower Mississippi River, announced it has donated images to the 2011 Flood Collection at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis. Fullen Dock and Warehouse commissioned aerial photos of its facilities along the Mississippi River to document the record river levels on May 10, the day the river crested. The photos are now a part of the permanent collection in the central library's history department.
"We're honored to share these images with the public and play a small part in what was such a historical moment for the region," said Lanny Chalk, Fullen Dock and Warehouse terminal manager. "While the record river levels were devastating for some, we understand the importance of documenting the significant event so others can learn about its impact on the city and surrounding areas."
Fullen Dock’s aerial photos will join the library’s existing Mid–South Flood Collection, which currently includes photos and documents from the floods of 1927 and 1937. The 2011 Flood Collection will be digitally archived by library staff and volunteers.
Despite the record river levels earlier this year, Fullen Dock and Warehouse remained fully operational. Its facilities, located above the 100–year flood plain, are equipped to handle levels of minus ten feet to plus 48 feet on the Memphis river gauge. In addition to its docking and warehouse capabilities, the company's Fullen Stone division served as a key supplier of fill sand used in sandbags to prevent and help mitigate damage caused from rising river levels in and around the region.
